International Initiatives by BWH Physical Therapy
The nonprofit organization Operation-Walk Boston provides crucial joint replacement surgery and basic equipment to patients in the Dominican Republic who are unable to obtain these services.
In 2009, Operation Walk will travel to Santo Domingo to perform joint replacements on as many as 50 patients who would not otherwise have access to these surgeries. This initiative is led by Thomas S. Thornhill, MD, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and coordinated by Roya Ghazinouri, PT, DPT, MS, Inpatient Clinical Supervisor, Department of Rehabilitation Services. A team of clinicians from BWH will train local orthopedic staff so they can further the Operation Walk mission. Physical therapists and physical therapy assistance from BWH will be traveling to Santo Domingo in March 2009 to provide treatment for patients following surgery.
