Welcome to the Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where American neurosurgery was founded by Dr. Harvey Cushing in 1913. Our team is devoted to the advancement of neurosurgical care, research, and education. The Department’s multidisciplinary staff of more than 15 clinical faculty and over 100 department members strives to provide patient-focused, world-class medical care for the entire spectrum of neurological diseases. In 2009, alone, our Department offered over 8,400 clinic visits and 2,600 surgical treatments to patients from local, national, and international communities.

 

CLINICAL SERVICES

Fifteen clinical neurosurgeons in the Department of Neurosurgery deliver state-of-the-art treatment and care via many revolutionary techniques to improve outcomes for our patients. We provide timely, patient-centered care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, as well as our community hospitals, BWH-MGH Health Care Center at Foxborough and 850 Boylston in Newton, for a range of neurological disorders, including:

RESEARCH

Our research efforts in neuroscience and tumor biology aim to achieve significant scientific discovery to improve neurosurgical treatments for patients. With a robust research agenda, our program is supported by nearly $10 million in funding each year.

TEACHING

Our teaching programs are designed to promote a comprehensive and deep understanding of neurosurgery, inspire compassionate care for patients, develop technical and surgical skills, and expand scientific inquisitiveness of future neurological surgeons. The Department organizes a 15-resident Harvard Neurosurgery training program in collaboration with Children’s Hospital Boston and offers a variety of subspeciality fellowship teachings in Cerebrovascular, Neuroendocrine/Pituitary, Brain Tumor, and Pediatrics.
