Who We Are
Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Faulkner Hospital (FH) merged in October 1998, forming a common parent company, Brigham and Women's/Faulkner Hospitals. Since that time, our physicians and administrators have been working together to integrate the programs and services of the two hospitals. Brigham and Women's/Faulkner Hospitals have a shared mission to provide comprehensive, coordinated care of the highest quality to our patients.
As the number of patients requiring complex care at Brigham and Women's Hospital has increased, the BWH medical staff has needed additional facilities for more routine cases. With the merger of our two hospitals, Faulkner, with its convenient location and excellent reputation, has been the ideal partner. In FY 2003, BWH surgeons have performed nearly 3,400 procedures at Faulkner Hospital. In addition, Brigham and Women's medical staff accounted for 1,900 medical/surgical admissions to Faulkner Hospital.
How Care Is Organized
Tertiary or complex care, such as cardiac surgery or bone marrow transplantation, is concentrated at BWH, and obstetrical care is only available at BWH. Primary and secondary inpatient care is concentrated at FH. Inpatient psychiatric and substance abuse care is only available at FH.
More and more of our physicians have appointments on both medical staffs, and Faulkner now has Brigham and Women's medical and surgical residents, as well as hospitalists. In this way, our clinical staff works together so that each patient receives care in the best location for the level of care required.
Physicians providing care at Brigham and Women's and Faulkner Hospitals have access to a patient's medical records at either hospital.
Joint Programs
An integral component of the BW/F merger has been the development of joint programs that have brought new expertise to the Faulkner campus and enhanced access for the community.
