The Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Hand and Upper Extremity Service treats the full spectrum of diseases of the hand and upper extremity (shoulder, arm, elbow, and wrist), including fractures, tumors, ligament disruptions and tendonitis, helping thousands of patients every year. The Service has particular expertise in the treatment of arthritis, entrapment neuropathies, Dupuytren’s Disease, traumatic disorders, and sports injuries of the hand and upper extremity.
Our Services
Listed below are some of the conditions treated and services offered here at the BWH Hand and Upper Extremity Service:
- Arthritis – We work with our colleagues in the Division of Rheumatology to offer a comprehensive approach to the treatment of arthritis in the hand and upper extremity. We have broad experience in surgical treatment of arthritis, including tendon transfers and joint replacements in the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand.
- Entrapment neuropathy (repetitive stress injury) – We utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques, enabling a quick recovery for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome and radial tunnel syndrome – Carpal tunnel release can now be performed in less than ten minutes under local anesthesia.
- Sports-related injuries – We consult with two major college teams in the Boston area and provide care for sports injuries in athletes from high school through college to the adult weekend warrior.
- Post-traumatic reconstruction – The treatments options include joint replacements for traumatic arthritis, joint releases for contractures, removal of heterotopic bone, nerve reconstructions and tendon transfers.
- Rehabilitation – Provided by highly trained certified occupational and physical therapists.
- Performing Arts Clinic – We collaborate with the Department of Neurology’s Performing Arts Clinic to treat musicians from all over the world with entrapment neuropathy and other performance-related conditions and injuries.
